Christine
Abrahams Gallery is located in the Melbourne inner city suburb
of Richmond, at 27 Gipps Street, Richmond on the corner of
Clifton Street. The Gallery building, once a clothing factory,
was converted to its present form by architect Daryl Jackson
in 1980.
The
Gallery is only a five minute drive from the centre of Melbourne
and equally close to both the St Kilda Road/South Melbourne
and the Toorak Road/South Yarra business districts.
The
building consists of four main spaces - a large central exhibition
area, a smaller side Gallery for more intimate exhibitions,
a works on paper and ceramics room, and a large stockroom
with a rack storage system where works can be viewed at one's
leisure. The stockroom is open to all visitors to the Gallery.
Christine
Abrahams Gallery exhibits works of quality and innovation
by contemporary artists. The Gallery's policy is to show a
broad spectrum of the visual arts including painting, drawing,
sculpture, prints, jewellery, textiles, photography and ceramics.
The Gallery primarily represents a core of prominent and emerging
Australian artists whose work is regularly exhibited.
To
promote a dialogue between Australian art and art from abroad,
the Gallery holds exhibitions of work by overseas artists.
The Gallery also shows the work of Australian artists overseas
and exhibitions have been held in Italy, the United Kingdom
and the United States, both at galleries and at international
art fairs as well as at the Australian Contemporary Art Fair
in Melbourne.
