The Gallery has had particular experience in the commissioning of artists to produce works for specific sites. We have been involved in some of the most important recent commissionings in Australia. These have included not only sculpture and painting, but also the production of tapestries and carpets designed by some of our leading artists. Examples of these can be seen at Parliament House in Canberra, Southgate on the banks of Melbourne's Yarra River, the entrance to the National Gallery of Victoria, corporate headquarters of some of Australia's major companies and also the premises of smaller businesses and private residences.

The advantage of commissioning a work of art are many. First, the work will be made to complement the site it will occupy. Consideration of the surrounding space, form and colour scheme can all be included in the artist's brief. Artists value the opportunity to produce site specific work. Indeed, historically, many of the world's great works of art were specifically commissioned. A commissioned work is unique and will always be associated with the person or organisation which had the foresight to initiate the project.
